Dr Lisa Campbell-Hunter
Counselling Psychologist
HCPC Reg.
I’m a counselling psychologist who has helped people to recognise their strengths, understand their experiences, work through emotional problems, and make sense of their responses to difficult situations.
Most of my experience has been working with people who have experienced abuse, trauma, neglect, racial discrimination, or adversity. I’ve listened to and supported them in understanding their feelings, improving self-belief, feeling less anxious, improving their mood, finding ways to relax, and asserting boundaries. I do not exclusively work with people who have experienced trauma, and I have worked with a range of mental health difficulties. I can also support individuals focusing on personal development and growth.
My therapeutic approach is pluralistic, which means I respect the diversity of experiences and viewpoints and don’t believe there is one single solution for everyone. Instead, I value your contributions and preferences, recognising your uniqueness and finding what works for you. I seek to collaborate in therapy, combining my psychological expertise with your perspectives.
My background
I have over 10 years of experience in a helping role in the mental health field, working with people who have experienced mental health difficulties, abuse, trauma, neglect, discrimination, or adversity. I’ve worked in different settings, including as a healthcare support worker with the NHS in mental health wards, a support practitioner with a Scottish charity, and a team leader for a supported self-help service. For the last 8 years, I’ve provided therapy in the NHS, the third sector, and a private organisation. In addition to my qualifications, I've completed a range of CPD courses, including a focus on dissociation and complex trauma. My research has focused on Armed Forces veterans and the impact of trauma.
I was born in Scotland and identify as Scottish-Chinese and part of the East and Southeast Asian community (ESEA). I have worked with people from this community who have experienced racial discrimination, particularly following the global pandemic in 2020.
When I’m not working, I enjoy walking, photography, reading, gym, listening to music (from heavy metal to pop) and spending time with family and friends.
